Obituary of John J. Payton

John J. Payton, of Stratford, CT, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton, CT. Known as Jack to all, he was born December 8, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, the first of four boys who would remain lifelong friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his extended family and large circle of friends. He is survived by his loving companion, Marjorie Goss, his brother Jim Payton, his five children, Maureen, John, Leslie, Lisa and Paula and all their families. Jack was pre-deceased in 1979 by his treasured wife of 27 years and mother of his children, Louise Cosco Payton. As a young boy in Sea Cliff, NY, Jack acquired a life-long love of boats and sailing and was a long-time member of the Housatonic Boat Club of Stratford, CT. A dedicated golfer for many years, he also traveled extensively for work and pleasure throughout his life. Jack attended the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1949. He continued his studies with graduate work in physics. He served in the Army Reserves Chemical Corps from 1950 to 1956, stationed at Fort Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Following an honorable discharge, Jack began his career at Standard Oil of Indiana in Salt Lake City. Jack and his family moved to Aruba at the end of 1956, where he worked at the Aruba refinery for Esso Corporation until 1969. Jacks career at Esso took him next to Caracas, Venezuela in 1969, and in 1973, he returned with his family to the U.S. to work at Exxons Manhattan headquarters. Jack coordinated supply and transport operations for the Western Hemisphere for Exxon, served as a special advisor to the Department of Energy on critical petroleum supply matters and was Exxons representative to NATO. In 1985, Jack retired from Exxon and moved to Oronoque Village in Stratford, CT, where he lived until he died. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mark Church, Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be Monday, July 28, 2008 in Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, Long Island.
