Dear Diana,
My thoughts and my prayers are with you. Doug will be missed so much. I live with my daughter and had a stroke in September from which I recovered well. I hope we can get together this summer, I shall call. I have so many good memories with Doug!
Love, Diana

Sorry for your loss. I knew him first from the opera songs coming from his bedroom as we visited Lyell at home, and later as a graduate school teacher. The world is also at a loss, there are not enough people like Doug.

My condolences and sympathy for your loss. Doug and I were friends for many years. I leaned much about opera from him and we had many enjoyable times together. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace!

To Diana, and Doug's family--I've always been humbled by the extent of Doug's knowledge about opera, and by his intense love for the art. It was my privilege to share some programs with him in past years, and only my move from Connecticut nineteen years ago has kept me from maintaining the closer relationship with Doug that I cherished. His death saddens me greatly; the world will certainly be a poorer place without him. His legacy, however, is the large group of listening folk whose lives he enriched with his vast store of music. Play on!
To all who loved Doug, and revered him, I extend my heartfelt condolences.

Doug was my colleague in the Management Department of Western Connecticut State University. We served as co-chairs of the Management Department. He was a true passionate intellectual from whom I learned so much both about academia and about opera. It was when he told me his sabbatical was on Fascist Opera that I really began to learn and appreciate a subject that I had known very little about. I will always remember him for helping me explore the passion of the opera.

Doug joined the business school faculty at WCSU three years after I did. He was a challenging, often humorous and engaging colleague. He contributed to the formation and development of the Ancell School of Business: writing curriculum, serving for many years as the Management Department’s representative to the University Senate, overseeing the public administration courses, and much more. A good and solid colleague, a decent man, and a lover of opera.

I will miss Doug on WMNR Tuesday evenings and remember his role as a not-so-quiet advocate of vocal music over the ages. I learned a lot, enjoyed a lot, and chuckled, too, at the evident fun he had with his enthusiasms and his guests. And a Yalie too! (Not to exclude Columbia!) --jps, YC '63
