To Dorothy Amaral Family. I am so sorry for the loss of Dorothy. . She was a good friend of my parents( Amandio & Lucy DeFigueiredo) back in the day. She was always lovely to me when I was with my dad and we were visiting at their house our next door at her brother-in-laws house. Lucy (DeFigueiredo) Newall.

There was something about her face. Beautiful. Then the name. Familiar. After came the memory. Warm. Obituaries can elicit such. A pleasant memory, over fifty years old. From around 1971. How good it felt to remember her act of kindness. Mrs. Amaral, Dorothy Rita I learned, invited me into her home for a special dinner with her loved ones. Easter, maybe. It was so long ago. I do remember looking forward to a home-cooked meal. I was a college classmate of her son Mark, we were friends so the invitation was given through him. This generosity was extended to a few other college buddies as well. We all had uncertain, yet bright futures. I remember feeling welcomed immediately. At home, away from home. Now I’m much older than she was back then in the early 1970s and I’ve come to appreciate what she did for Mark, me, and a handful of hungry, needy young men, boys really. It was a simple invitation to break bread with family. Not mine, not ours, but family nonetheless. I hope I’ve created such memories for a few. I’ve had much joy in my life, and hope I’ve spread just a little, like Mrs. Amaral. We’re not much if not fondly remembered. As her family and friends, I remember Dorothy Rita fondly.
