After retiring from the CDOT, he joined the STV Group, a worldwide engineering firm, as the Resident Engineer for the intersection of Interstate-84 and Route 7 in Danbury and later, for the rebuilding of several bridges known as the mix-master in Waterbury, CT. He retired from the STV Group in 1993. In 1966, John was critically injured in an automobile accident. He suffered a spinal cord severance that resulted in permanent paralysis.
